Because of 9/11: Loss, Gratitude & Never Forgetting

Answering the call to serve came very naturally to me. When tragedy struck our nation on September 11, 2001, I was transitioning into higher leadership and responsibility within the U.S. Army.

The privilege of leading America's sons and daughters into combat is a sacred duty and an honor never to be taken for granted. Aside from my faith, sharing part of my story and reflecting on what good could come from such an unimaginable tragedy has been one of the strongest healing forces I've ever felt.

So today, when I ask myself, "Because of 9/11..." it's no longer only about a never-ending war, loss, trauma, or suffering; it's also about gratitude for having served my country, knowing I can find purpose in pain. Blessings can also rise from the ashes of tragedy; we have to look harder for them and, with a grateful heart, thank those continuing to carry the torch, continuing to run towards the screams and fire, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for a perfect stranger and to defend our freedom.

"Never Forget."
